This kit opens with a scenario in which students monitoring a stream realize that the water has become acidic. In order to help solve the mystery, the lessons explore the color changes of a pH indicator solution. After using the indicator to classify different substances as either acid, base, or neutral, the students in the story piece together what happened to the stream.

 

The kit is intended to be used in a classroom, under the guidance of a teacher, with students in grades 4–8. The kit contains enough materials for multiple classes of 32 students, and a teacher guide which includes the student activity sheets.
